Scope and Content Central Station, Gordon Street, Glasgow The first part of this station was opened in 1879 by the Caledonian Railway, as the terminus for its Anglo-Scottish and other prestigious services. It was greatly enlarged in 1899-1905 to designs by D A Mathieson, engineer and James Miller, architect, to handle all its services to southern Scotland and to England. This shows the screen wall to Hope Street, built on the eastern edge of the 1899-1905 extension. The ground-floor arches give access to various parts of the undercroft. The wide arch on the left leads to a curved, ramped carriageway to the main arrival platform in the extension. This screen wall embodies steelwork designed by Mathieson, and masonry by Miller. Mathieson was the Chief Civil Engineer to the Caledonian Railway, and the rebuilding of Central Station was very much his own concept. His design partnership with Miller was a durable and fruitful one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
