Scope and Content Greenhead Works, Nos 25-45 Greenhead Street, Glasgow This mill was built in about 1840 for John Bartholomew & Co, cotton-spinners, merchants and manufacturers, perhaps for power-loom weaving. They sold it in 1859 to R & J Dick, who used it for the manufacture of goods from gutta percha, a natural thermoplastic material related to india rubber. This shows the north-east side of the building from a courtyard belonging to the former Greenhead Brewery. The rounded projection housed the staircase, and the other projections contained privies. Behind this building were large extensions made by the Dicks, forming their Greenhead Works. When the Dick brothers gave up business they gave the business to its senior staff, who continued it for many years. Latterly its main product was balata belting, used for the belt drives to machinery. When demand for that ended the firm closed. This cotton mill has been demolished since this photograph was taken.
