Scope and Content College Goods Station, No 172 High Street, Glasgow This station, was constructed from 1871 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway, partly on the site of the Old College (University) of Glasgow. It was extended westwards over the site of the old church of the Black Friars in 1876-83. In 1882-3 a large bonded warehouse was added along the southern edge. This shows the offices of the station, probably built in the late 1880s after the last section of the Old College was demolished. The main part of the station is to the right, reached through the main entrance seen here. This station was very advanced for its time, and it was only the run-down of rail-borne general goods traffic that resulted in its closure in 1968. It was subsequently demolished, apart from the 1882-3 warehouse, which is now flats, and the front wall of the undercroft, which now forms a boundary wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
