Scope and Content Charing Cross Station, Glasgow This station was opened in 1886 by the Glasgow City & District Railway, an underground line through the city centre promoted by the North British Railway to link its line to Coatbridge with its Stobcross branch, giving it the nucleus of an extensive suburban system. This shows the street-level booking office of the station, linked to the platforms, in cutting to the east, by covered staircases. The double-V sign above the entrance was the logo for the 1960 electrification of the former North British Railway suburban system in and around Glasgow. This view was taken immediately before the west end of the station, including the building seen here, was demolished to make way for the M8 urban motorway, which crosses the railway at this point. The station was rebuilt slightly further east, and is now mainly in tunnel, rather than in cutting. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
