Scope and Content Roslin Colliery & Brick Works, Midlothian This colliery was sunk in 1901-3 by the Shotts Iron Co, and produced steam and house coal. There was a steam winding engine on the downcast shaft, built by Inglis & Co, Airdrie in 1912, and a unique hydraulic winder on the upcast shaft, by MacTaggart, Scott & Co and Beckett & Anderson Ltd. This shows the pit-head gear and winding engine house of the downcast shaft, used for winding coal. The upcast shaft is out of sight to the right. In the right foreground are two of the steel-bodied hutches used for bringing coal from the face to the surface. This colliery was closed in 1969, and immediately abandoned, the surface buildings being demolished. It was one of several pits in Midlothian and East Lothian owned by Lanarkshire iron-smelting companies. The engines were both scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
