Scope and Content Roslin Colliery & Brick Works, Midlothian This colliery was sunk in 1901-3 by the Shotts Iron Co, and produced steam and house coal. There was a steam winding engine on the downcast shaft, built by Inglis & Co, Airdrie in 1912, and a unique hydraulic winder on the upcast shaft, by MacTaggart, Scott & Co and Beckett & Anderson Ltd. This shows the left side of the Inglis engine looking towards the cylinder. The engine is unusual for Scotland in being fitted with twin winding drums. The engine has piston valves. It had new cylinders in 1954. This colliery was closed in 1969, and immediately abandoned, the surface buildings being demolished. It was one of several pits in Midlothian and East Lothian owned by Lanarkshire iron-smelting companies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
