Copy of ED 11237

Scope and Content View from south of Woodburn house, No 54 Canaan Lane, Edinburgh This large house was built c.1812 in an area known as 'the land of Canaan', the largest of the Morningside estates to be developed for residential use. It was used as a nurses' home between 1922 and 1966. This photograph shows the garden side of the house. A prominent bowed section with cast iron balcony and dormer above forms the focal point of the block. The section to the right is being altered with the addition of a modern extension. The ground floor of this house has been constructed of rusticated stonework. This means that the joints are emphasized by deeply-cut channels in each block of stone. The upper floor is made of smooth ashlar stonework. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
