Scope and Content Showroom, Hamilton & Inches, Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, No 88 Princes Street, Edinburgh Hamilton & Inches, 'goldsmiths, silversmiths, clock & watchmakers to Her Majesty', opened a new shop and workshop at No 88 Princes Street in 1888. Their splendid showroom was photographed in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This large, top-lit saloon showroom, built at the rear of the shop, has a ribbed and embossed ceiling. The display cases contain silver plate and tableware, elaborate candelabra, decanter stands and lamp bases as well as more traditional Scottish pieces. One of the traditional Scottish items made by Hamilton & Inches was the quaich, a drinking bowl offered as 'a cup of welcome' to a visitor in the Western Highlands. It is still made by the firm today in its traditional shape with two handles or lugs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
