Scope and Content Gallery, Gosford House, Aberlady, East Lothian This photograph of the gallery of Gosford House was taken in 1893 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, designed in 1790 by Robert Adam for the Earl of Wemyss, was remodelled by William Young in 1891. This long transverse gallery, designed on a palatial scale, is entered by a double stair from the hall below. It has niches for Classical statuary at the far end, and pink and white Derbyshire alabaster for columns, ceiling insets, dado and frieze. The gallery, designed by Young, is similar to his work in Glasgow's City Chambers, 1883-8. The builders were Kirkwood of Edinburgh, with structural steelwork by Sir William Arrol of Glasgow. The stone and marble were supplied by Farmer & Brindley, London. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
