Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh The Edinburgh College of Art, designed in 1906-9 by John More Dick Peddie, stands on an impressive site overlooking Edinburgh Castle. The interior of the building was photographed in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The entrance hall, with its magnificent coffered ceiling and paired Doric columns and pilasters, leads to a monumental stone staircase giving access to the first-floor galleries. The statue is part of the college's large collection of antique casts. The college was built around two rectangular courts, with a staircase at the centre. The great eastern sculpture court was built to double-height in order to house a huge collection of antique casts begun by the Board of Manufactures in 1797. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
