Scope and Content Upper Hall, Midlothian County Buildings, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh Midlothian County Buildings were designed in 1900-5 by the architect, James Macintyre Henry, to replace the old County Hall which stood on the site. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1905. The upper hall is lined by Ionic arcades above which is an elaborate frieze, decorated with flowers and dancing figures by the plasterer, A Hunter. The wrought-iron balustrade around the floor light has a pattern of elegant back-to-back winged ladies. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), became indispensable to the leading architects of the day. Even Scottish architects found it was well worth his travelling expenses from London in order to have their works photographed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
