Scope and Content Hall, No 2 Lancaster Crescent, Kelvinside, Glasgow No 2 Lancaster Crescent, one of nine fairly small terraced houses built c.1898 on part of the Redlands estate, was designed by the architect, James Miller. The interior was photographed in 1901 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall, with oak panelling and antlers on the wall, was considered to be in part of the male domain of the house. It was large enough for the family to sit in, and formed a convenient meeting place for conversation. Note the telephone on the wall. The central hall was often the room where the men of the household were allowed the chance of smoking in the company of ladies. It was used as a sitting room, for entertaining or could double up as a dining room as the plates on the dresser would suggest. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
