Scope and Content Staircase, No 2 Lancaster Crescent, Kelvinside, Glasgow The interior of No 2 Lancaster Crescent was photographed in 1901 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, one of nine linked in a terrace, was designed in 1898 by the Glasgow architect, James Miller. The oak staircase was an important feature of the house. The stained glass gallery window (right) continues the masculine theme of the oak-panelled hall below, and the electric light fitting, one of the new technologies of the time, mimics a chandelier. By 1910, less than five per cent of Scottish households had electricity. Although electricity allowed a new freedom in the design of light fixtures, many people preferred their fittings to mimic the chandeliers of the candlelit era. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
