Scope and Content Staircase, No 2 Lancaster Crescent, Kelvinside, Glasgow No 2 Lancaster Crescent, one of nine houses linked in a terrace on the north side of Great Western Road, was designed in 1898 by the architect, James Miller. The interior of the house was photographed in 1901 by photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The oak staircase, with its carved square-cut newel post, was an important feature of the house, rising from the central hall below to the first-floor landing. A smaller staircase leads from the landing to the billiard room on the attic floor. The central hall was often regarded as a sitting room where the men of the household were allowed the chance of smoking in the company of ladies instead of being relegated to the isolation of the distant billiard room or smoking room.
