Scope and Content Entrance to the Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, Primrose Street, Alloa, Clackmannan, 1898 The Alloa Public Baths, designed by the architectural firm, Burnet & Campbell, were given to the town in 1898 by John Thomson Paton, a local mill owner. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior. This splendid, two-storeyed Scots Renaissance building was adorned with balustrading, sculptures and elaborate architectural features. The main entrance from Primrose Street, seen here, was through a tall, red granite recessed porch. The opening of the baths was of great social significance for the town as it provided a pool and gymnasium for general use by all. It also gave the opportunity, through exercise, to produce 'a healthy mind and a healthy body', both good Victorian values. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
