Scope and Content Grand Entrance, Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, Innerleithen Road, Peebles Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, a hotel specialising in a choice of water cures and therapy, was photographed in 1894 by Harry Bedford Lemere, one of the leading architectural photographers of his time. The hotel, designed John Starforth, opened in 1881. The entrance to the hotel was through an iron-framed conservatory containing a selection of potted plants. The cane chairs, popular in Victorian conservatories, have been carefully positioned on each side of the entrance to the main staircase. The first British 'hotel hydropathic', an establishment where people went for a water cure, was set up in 1842 by two doctors in Malvern. The word 'hydropathic' first appeared in the English language the following year in Tait's Magazine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
