Scope and Content Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, Innerleithen Road, Peebles, looking south Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, a popular late 19th-century Scottish hydropathic, opened as a hotel specialising in water cures in 1881. This photograph of the hotel and the surrounding countryside was taken in 1894 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The five-storeyed hotel was built in a French Renaissance style, and stood in an imposing south-facing position overlooking the town of Peebles. It offered magnificent views over the wooded valley of the River Tweed to the hills beyond. The site for a hotel at Peebles was ideal as it was close to two railway stations, making access easy for visitors from all over Britain. It also lay in the heart of the Scottish Borders, made famous in the novels of the popular author, Sir Walter Scott. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
