Scope and Content Conservatory, Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, Innerleithen Road, Peebles Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, one of several hydropathic hotels to be built in Scotland during the second half of the 19th century, opened in 1881. The Victorian conservatory was photographed in 1894 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent iron-framed conservatory was described in an early hotel brochure as an 'arbour of peace' with its 'rarest plants'. It was 34m long, and guests could promenade along its length as a recommended indoor activity for wet weather. The hotel offered a range of indoor activities, including swimming lessons at the pool, and billiards for gentlemen. Its huge recreation room had a stage for musical and dramatic entertainments, and hosted a 'ball, fancy or ordinary' on Saturday nights. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
