Scope and Content Edinburgh Public Library (now the Edinburgh Central Public Library), George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, from the west The Edinburgh Public Library, designed in 1887-90 by the architect, Sir George Washington Browne, was the first Carnegie library in Scotland. This photograph of the east front was taken in 1893 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The library, built in the style of Françoise I, is designed to maximise light. The east front, with mullioned windows flanked by pilasters, is reached by its own bridge from the street since it actually stands in the Cowgate four storeys below. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1918) was a Scottish-born industrialist and philanthropist who built up the largest iron and steel works in America. He left £70,000,000 which helped to endow 2,811 public libraries throughout Britain and the United States. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
