Scope and Content Redfern Ltd, Ladies' Tailors, Nos 31-2 Princes Street, Edinburgh The new Princes Street premises of Redfern Ltd opened in 1893 in a splendid building designed by the architect, Sir George Washington Browne. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior. This tall, narrow Victorian Gothic building is adorned with many elaborate architectural features, including contrasting bands of coloured stonework. Above the opened door is a royal crest which signifies 'appointment to Her Majesty Queen Victoria'. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), became indispensable to the leading architects of the day. Scottish architects found it was well worth paying for his travelling expenses from London in order to have their works shown to advantage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
