Scope and Content Dining Room, Station Hotel, Leonard Street, Perth The Station Hotel, Perth, built jointly by three railway companies, stood at a strategic position on the route north to the Highlands. This photograph of the hotel dining room was taken in 1891 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This large dining room, with a wooden panelled dado and ceiling, has a certain grimness, at odds with the neatly set tables and crisp white tablecloths and napkins. The electric light fittings were one of the new technologies of the age. The hotel was visited on many occasions by Queen Victoria on journeys to and from her favourite castle at Balmoral on Deeside. The Queen, who was supposed to have disliked dining on trains, found the hotel a convenient location for the Royal Luncheon. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
