Scope and Content Private Dining Room, The Station Hotel, Leonard Street, Perth The Station Hotel stood beside Perth station at an important railway junction on the route north to the Highlands. This photograph of a private dining room was taken in c.1895 as the hotel prepared for the arrival of Queen Victoria. The room, furnished by Wylie & Lochhead of Glasgow, is elaborately dressed for the royal visit. The table, with its starched white cloth, is decked with fruit, including grapes, bananas and a pineapple, and decorated with candelabra, complete with shades. Queen Victoria is supposed to have disliked dining on trains. Perth formed the last stage of the Queen's long journey from London to her favourite castle at Balmoral on Deeside, and The Station Hotel was a convenient location for the royal luncheon.
