Scope and Content Detail of carved wooden cornice on chimney-piece, Vernonholme, Riverside Drive, Dundee This carved panel is from the ground floor of a large villa designed in 1906 by architects Johnston & Baxter, for A P Mathewson, a Dundee manufacturer. The interior has many fine decorative details such as carved panels and stained-glass windows. This panel bears the Scottish proverb 'EAST WEST HAME'S BEST', a variation of the famous saying; 'There's no place like Home'. Above the inscription, in the pediment, is a cartouche with foliate surround. Similar decoration fills the flanking pilasters. The lavish interiors of this villa reflect the wealth and taste of the original occupants, expressed through design. This large house, like many of its kind, has now been converted to flats, after use as the headquarters of Tayside Health Board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
