Scope and Content Detail of stained glass window on the ground floor of the stair hall, Vernonholme, Riverside Drive, Dundee Vernonholme is a two-storeyed villa designed by architects Johnston & Baxter in 1906, for their client, Mr A P Mathewson, a manufacturer. After being the headquarters of Tayside Health Board, it was converted to flats c.2000. This photograph shows a knight in armour with a large sword. He is framed by scrolling foliage, with a border of crowns and roses. Below him (not seen in this image) is the motto; ' GENTIL HERTE SHAWIS GENTIL DEDE' (a gentle heart shows gentle deed). This figure is complemented by flanking windows depicting an old man with a book inscribed 'OLD WINE, OLD FRIENDS, OLD BOOKS ARE BEST' and one of the Fates with her spinning wheel and distaff inscribed 'TAK TENT O TIME ERE TIME BE TINT'.
