Scope and Content View from south-east of Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I, Dundee, during demolition Approved for construction in 1964, Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I consisted of six 17-storeyed slab blocks. They contained 1788 flats in total. The blocks were constructed using the 'Skarne' system of pre-fabricated panels. This photograph shows demolition in progress on two of the blocks. Clouds of dust indicate the explosions along the side of the slab block on the left. The public are being kept back by a cordon, and cameramen are recording the scene. The Skarne system of pre-fabricated panels and units cast on site was used to build this vast development. The company built a factory at Longhaugh Quarry to meet contracts offered by Dundee in the 1960s, and went on to build the Whitfield development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
