Scope and Content Anderston Foundry, No 100 Cheapside Street, Glasgow This works was established in 1823 by Henry Houldsworth, proprietor of the Anderston Cotton Works on the other side of Cheapside Street, to make and repair textile machinery for his cotton-spinning mill, and for outside customers. This shows the front block of the works from the top floor of the Anderston Cotton Work, looking north-west. This range probably housed the machine shops, the foundry being in the yard behind. When machine tools were light, multi-storeyed machine shops were common. The Anderston Foundry continued in operation after the Houldsworths' interest in textile manufacture ended in 1878, and the firm developed a good reputation for making power looms, many of which worked into the 1970s and 1980s.
