Scope and Content Craleckan Iron Works, Furnace, Argyll & Bute This charcoal-fuelled iron smelting works was established in 1755 by the Argyle Furnace Co, founded by partners in the Duddon Furnace in the Lake District. It used ore brought up from west Lancashire, and drew supplies of charcoal from the woodlands of mid-Argyll. This shows the furnace stack from the south-east. The tapering base is massive to contain the mass of iron ore, limestone and charcoal in the shaft of the furnace. At the top is the tunnel head, a chimney at the top of the shaft to take hot gases up to make charging the furnace less dangerous. This iron works closed in 1812, during a serious recession, and never reopened. It was abandoned with a charge of raw materials still in place, so that the lining is still intact, a rare, if not unique feature. The furnace remains are relatively complete, and were repaired in the early 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
