Scope and Content Craleckan Iron Works, Furnace, Argyll & Bute This charcoal-fuelled iron smelting works was established in 1755 by the Argyle Furnace Co, founded by partners in the Duddon Furnace in the Lake District. It used ore brought up from west Lancashire, and drew supplies of charcoal from the woodlands of mid-Argyll. This shows the furnace from the north-east. The furnace stack has trees growing out of it, and the building in front is the casting house, in which the molten iron was run into sand moulds. To the right, also overgrown with trees, is the blowing house, on the ground floor, with the charging house above. This iron works closed in 1812, during a serious recession, and never reopened. It was abandoned with a charge of raw materials still in place, so that the lining is still intact, a rare, if not unique feature. The furnace remains are relatively complete, and were repaired in the early 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
