Scope and Content Warehouse, Castle Bank, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway Kirkcudbright was an important port in medieval Scotland, and though its relative significance declined, until the coming of the railway in 1864 it was a focal point for coastal trade. This warehouse was built, probably in the mid-19th century to handle goods in transit through the harbour. This shows the warehouse from the south-east. The left-hand end abuts the river, and had its own wharf. It was probably built for handling imported grain, perhaps after the repeal of the Corn Laws in the 1840s. By the mid-1960s this warehouse was in marginal use for the storage of fertilisers. It was subsequently sold for residential conversion, with the street frontage cut back, and balconies built on the river frontage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
