Scope and Content Granary, Beaconsfield Place, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway Kirkcudbright was an important port in medieval Scotland, and though its relative significance declined, until the coming of the railway in 1864 it was a focal point for coastal trade, with a basin off the River Dee. The basin was filled in and the harbour redeveloped in 1910, when this granary was probably built. This shows the granary from the east, with the 1910 quay beyond. The structure is built of reinforced concrete, and has accommodation both for grain in bags, and for bulk grain to be stored in silos. The engineers for the harbour reconstruction, and probably for this building, were J & H V Eaglesham of Ayr. In the 1960s there was still coastal trade in petroleum products to Kirkcudbright, but not in grain. This granary has been demolished, and the coastal tanker service has ended. The harbour is now used only by fishing boats and pleasure craft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
