Scope and Content Whifflet Foundry, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire This works was established in 1857 by R B Tennent, initially to make rolling mill rolls for the local malleable-iron works. When the steel industry developed in Scotland the firm increased its capacity to make bigger rolls. It became a limited company in 1900, and later part of the British Rollmakers' Corporation. This shows one of the small Sentinel steam locomotives used for moving materials round the foundry. At the time there were three of them, built between 1953 and 1958. In the background is some of the scrap to be remelted to make rolls, including parts of steam locomotives. These locomotives continued in use until the mid-1980s, and when they were withdrawn three were preserved. The fourth is still in existence, in a scrap yard. This foundry has closed, and was demolished in 2001-2. The firm still operates in a more modern works nearby. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
