Scope and Content Electric Power Station, Greenholm Street, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire This station had its origin in 1899, as a small municipal power station. It was substantially enlarged in the 1920s, and in 1932 became a base-load station for the National Grid, probably on account of its strategic position in a major industrial town, with easy access to coal. This shows the station from Low Glencairn Street, looking west. The boiler house is to the rear, with its steel chimneys. In front of it are the administrative offices. As can be seen, the station was operating to full capacity in winter weather. The building of modern coal-fired and nuclear power stations during the 1960s made this station uneconomic, and it was closed and dismantled in the late 1960s. The offices in this view survived, and were still there in the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
