Scope and Content Railway Viaduct, Ayr, South Ayrshire This viaduct spans the River Ayr, and was opened in 1856 by the Glasgow & Belfast Union Railway, and rebuilt in 1878. The original viaduct was probably a temporary wooden structure. The viaduct has a footbridge along its western side. This shows the viaduct from the south-east. It has four spans, and is built of cream sandstone. The river is tidal to a weir just upstream of this bridge. The footbridge is on the other side. The opening of the original bridge allowed a new station to be built just to the south, replacing one at Newton-on-Ayr. This new station was much more conveniently placed for the town centre than its predecessor. The bridge now carries supports for the catenary for overhead electric power lines.
