Scope and Content Quayside Mills, Quayside Street, Leith, Edinburgh These mills have complex origins. The oldest part is the former St Ninian's Church, founded in about 1493, but rebuilt in 1595, 1736 and finally in 1825, as a granary. At right angles to this is the former manse, early 17th century, with a wood and lead belfry added in 1675. The rest of the complex is 19th century. This shows the mills from the north-east. The gabled block towards the left is the much-rebuilt church, with its own minute quay. The main mill range is in the centre, with its kiln on the right. Above the kiln is the manse belfry of 1675. These mills belonged to McGregor & Co, millers and grain merchants, who rebuilt part of the complex in the 1970s, but who left the complex in the 1980s. It lay empty for several years, but was restored in the mid-1990s, by architects Simpson & Brown, as offices and flats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
