Scope and Content Waverley Station and North Bridge, Edinburgh The first station on this site was opened in 1846 by the North British Railway, and was the terminus for its services to Berwick. It was quickly joined by an end to end connection with the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway. The station was rebuilt in the 1860s and again in 1892-1902 to designs by Blyth & Westland. This shows the station, with its ridge and furrow steel-framed roof from the north-east, looking down from Regent Road. The North Bridge, rebuilt in 1896-7, can be seen in the background. On the left are the east signal box and the goods station. The reconstruction of the North Bridge was essential to the rebuilding of Waverley, as the old bridge was a masonry viaduct with massive piers, severely restricting the siting of both tracks and platforms. The rebuilt station has through platforms on both sides, with bay platforms at both ends. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
