Scope and Content Railway Station, Station Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire The first station on this site was opened in 1856, when the Ayr & Maybole Railway was opened, with its viaduct over the River Ayr. This station was rebuilt in 1886, with two through platforms and two bay platforms. A station hotel was built on the west side of the station. This shows the buildings on the south-bound platform, comprising waiting rooms, porters' room, lavatories etc. The booking office is on the north-bound side. A glazed roof links the two platform buildings. The tall building to the rear is the station hotel. All the buildings are built of red sandstone, probably from the Ballochmyle quarry at Mauchline, like most of Ayr's late 19th-century buildings. The glazed roof was cut back when the Glasgow-Ayr route was electrified in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
