Scope and Content Ayr Harbour, South Ayrshire Ayr Harbour appears to have developed along the south bank of the River Ayr in the 17th century, and to have been extended by quays on the north bank in the 18th century. These quays seem to have been rebuilt in the mid-19th century, and this wet dock was added in 1874-8 on the north side. This shows the dock from the south-east. It was built with gates to allow water to be impounded at high tide, so that vessels in it could remain afloat as the tide ebbed, but by 1966 the gates were disused. The two cranes on the right are loading coal into coasters. The cranes in use in 1966 lifted a railway wagon at a time and tipped its contents into the holds of vessels at the quays. Since then hopper wagons have been introduced, which discharge on to conveyors which take the coal direct to the ship. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
