Scope and Content Ayr Harbour (Quay, North Harbour Street), South Ayrshire Ayr Harbour appears to have developed along the south bank of the river Ayr in the 17th century, and to have been extended by quays on the north bank in the 18th century, primarily for the shipment of coal. These quays seem to have been rebuilt in the mid 19th century. This shows part of the quays on the south bank of the river, looking north west, with the steam bucket-ladder dredger 'Carrick' alongside. The vessel appears to be dredging alongside the quay. The building on the left is an ice factory to serve the fishing boats which at the time normally used this quay. The south quay seen here was used as the fish quay until the late 1990s when the fishing fleet was transferred to Troon Harbour to free up this part of Ayr Harbour for residential and leisure development.
