Scope and Content Ayr Harbour, South Ayrshire Ayr Harbour appears to have developed along the south bank of the River Ayr in the 17th century, and to have been extended by quays on the north bank in the 18th century, primarily for the shipment of coal. These quays seem to have been rebuilt in the mid-19th century. This shows part of the quays on the north bank of the river, looking north-west. The ships are in the harbour to load coal probably for London. The electric coaling crane was built by Cowans Sheldon & Co Ltd, Carlisle and installed in 1954. This crane was designed to hoist one railway wagon at a time, and to tip its contents into the hold of the waiting ship. This process has been superseded at Ayr by the use of hopper wagons discharging on to a belt conveyor which takes the coal straight into the ship's hold, a much quicker process.
