Scope and Content New Cumnock Mill, New Cumnock, East Ayrshire This was a small water-powered corn mill, the shell of which was possibly rebuilt in the early 19th century, when high corn prices during the Napoleonic Wars encouraged millers to re-equip. The machinery had probably been renewed in the late 19th century. This shows part of the millstones floor of the mill, with a hand-driven cattle-cake crusher in the middle, and part of the casing of the shelling stones to the right. The cords controlling the sack hoist are on the left. In 1966, this was the only mill in Ayrshire still in full commercial operation which was still grinding corn by water power. It had three pairs of stones, driven by a mid-breast waterwheel about 4.9m by 0.6m. The mill was demolished in about 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
