Scope and Content Ochiltree Mill, East Ayrshire This was a good example of a large rural meal mill, and was probably built in the early 19th century, when high corn prices during the Napoleonic Wars encouraged millers to re-equip. This one was powered by a low-breast water- wheel, and had four pairs of millstones. This shows the wastewater sluice at the mill, which was supplied with water by a lade from the Lugar Water. This sluice was upstream from the wheel, which had been removed by 1966, and was opened when the wheel was not in use, to keep the lade running, and prevent silting. Ayrshire became primarily a dairying country from the mid-19th century, reducing the market for milling, other than for animal provender. This mill had been gutted by 1966, but the shell was in good condition, and it was used as a store. It has since been demolished, after being damaged by fire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
