Scope and Content Kilmarnock Station, East Ayrshire The first station on this site was opened in 1843 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway. The station grew in importance with the opening of a through line to Carlisle in 1850, and of a direct line to Glasgow in 1873. This station was rebuilt in 1878 to reflect its significance. This is a general view of the station from the south end, with the main north-bound platform on the left, and an island platform on the right, the left-hand face of which is the main south-bound platform, while the right-hand face was used by local trains. Local trains ran from Kilmarnock to Darvel until 1964, to Glasgow until 1966, and to Ayr until 1969. The two latter services have since been reinstated. The island platform seen here has been demolished, and the awning on the north-bound platform has lost much of its glazing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
