Scope and Content Kilmarnock Station, East Ayrshire The first station on this site was opened in 1843 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway. The station grew in importance with the opening of a through line to Carlisle in 1850, and of a direct line to Glasgow in 1873. This station was rebuilt in 1878 to reflect its significance. This shows the end of the bay platforms at the north end of the station, used by local services, in this case a railbus on a service to Ayr via the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway. Railbuses were used on a number of branch lines in Scotland in the 1960s in an attempt to increase traffic and reduce running costs, but they proved unreliable. Of the lines on which they served few have survived, though one of these is the Kilmarnock & Troon line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
