Scope and Content Ayr Roller Skating Rink, Boswell Park, Ayr Ayr Roller Skating Rink, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Campbell Reid, in the early 1900s to cater for the popular craze of roller skating, was photographed in c.1909 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The building had a simple arched hall, and a Classical-style curved entrance front with Ionic columns. The highly ornate corner pavilions were each topped by a domed roof and an electrified glass globe. Roller skating became a popular form of public entertainment in the 1880s. It regained popularity in the early 1900s when cinema was seen as 'a poor man's entertainment'. The skating craze did not last long, and many rinks were converted into cinemas.
