Scope and Content Ayr Roller Skating Rink, Boswell Park, Ayr The interior of the Ayr Roller Skating Rink, designed by James Campbell Reid, was photographed in c.1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The rink opened in the early 1900s in response to the revived craze for roller skating. The rink, seen here decorated with flowers and garlands, was a rectangular hall spanned by bowed and latticed girders. It provided seating for spectators around the perimeter, and had a gallery at the far end (centre) for distinguished visitors. Roller skating, a craze in the 1880s, regained its popularity in the early 1900s. However, it failed to compete with moving pictures, and the Ayr rink became the Ayr Electric Pavilion cinema in 1910. It was rebuilt in 1931 as Green's Picturedrome. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
