Scope and Content Ayr Roller Skating Rink, Boswell Park, Ayr Ayr Roller Skating Rink was built in the early 1900s by the architect, James Campbell Reid, to cater for the popular pastime of roller skating. This view of the exterior was taken in c.1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This impressive building had an elaborate pseudo-Classical frontage with a curved entrance and simple arrangement of small windows. The ornate corner pavilions were each topped by a single electric globe light. The indoor rink was built in the early 1900s to meet the public demand for roller skating. However, the craze did not last long, and in 1910, the rink was converted into a cinema, the Ayr Electric Pavilion, to meet a new demand for better silent films. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
