Scope and Content Auditorium, West End Playhouse, No 317 St George's Road, Glasgow The West End Playhouse in St George's Road was designed by the architect, William B Whitie. This photograph of the auditorium was taken by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after the theatre opened in August 1913. This small, charming three-tiered theatre was designed in a Neo-Baroque style. The cheapest seat was on a wooden bench in 'the gods' on the top tier, and the most expensive in a splendidly draped 'box' on the middle tier next to the stage. The theatre reopened in 1914 as the Empress Variety and Picture Playhouse, and became the New Empress in 1933 under the management of George Urie Scott. It was renamed the Falcon Theatre in 1960, and finally closed as Jimmy Logan's New Metropole in 1972. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
