Scope and Content Lord Esher's Bedroom, the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The Roman Camp Hotel, dating from the 17th century, became the country retreat of Reginald, Viscount of Esher in the late 19th century. This photograph of Lord Esher's bedroom was taken in 1911 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This low, cottage-style room is dominated by a large painted panel, decorated with cherubs and garlands, above the fireplace. The bed is surrounded by shelves of books, part of Lord Esher's extensive collection. Lord Esher was a celebrated book collector who became equerry to King George V. He extensively remodelled the house in the early 20th century, and embellished the interior with fireplaces, decorative panels and fragments gathered from various places.
