Scope and Content Library, the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The library of the Roman Camp Hotel was photographed in 1911 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, for the then owner, Lord Esher. The house, which dates from the 17th century, was substantially remodelled in the early 20th century. The library has a heavily ornate plasterwork ceiling, and is lined with wooden panelling. In the right-hand corner is a 'secret' door, beyond which lies a narrow recess. The furniture and books may have been specially positioned for the photograph. Lord Esher, a book collector and equerry to King George V, added the library to the west wing of the house when he remodelled the 'Camp' in the early 20th century. The room contains two carefully concealed doors, one of which leads to a 'secret' chapel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
