Scope and Content Library, the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The library of the Roman Camp Hotel was added to the west wing of the house by the then owner, Lord Esher, in the early 20th century. The interior was photographed in 1911 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a splendidly ornate plasterwork ceiling, and an armorial panel above the fireplace. The wooden panelled walls are lined with a large collection of books, and conceal a door in the left-hand corner which leads to a 'secret' chapel. Lord Esher, a celebrated book collector who became equerry to King George V, bought the house in the late 19th century as a country retreat, and then proceeded to remodel and embellish it with fragments gathered from various places.
